International Monetary Fund Hacked of the Day
International Monetary Fund Hacked of the Day: The New York Times reported yesterday that the International Monetary Fund, a organization responsible for handling international financial crises, was the victim of a “large and sophisticated cyberattack whose dimensions are still unknown.”
The fund possesses sensitive fiscal information on many nations and its data has the potential to seriously effect markets and politics all over the world.
David Hawley, a spokesman for the IMF, would not provide details on the breach, but said “We are investigating an incident, and the fund is fully functional.”
Another official acknowledged that “This was a very major breach,” and that it had occurred sometime in the last few months.
The World Bank, an organization that helps develop international economies, is headquartered across the street from the IMF in Washington D.C. and cut off the link that allows the two organizations to share information. A spokesman for the World Bank said it was done out of “an abundance of caution” until more information is known about the attack.
On Saturday night, Reuters reported that U.S. Defense Department spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel April Cunningham of the Air Force, said the FBI is currently investigating the incident.
News of the breach comes after its managing director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, was arrested in New York under charges of sexually assaulting a hotel maid in May.
