Why I think the MMDA Speeding Wall will Fail

Check it here if you haven't seen it yet.

Basically, the MMDA thought it would be a great idea to post pictures of people who are caught speeding, but then there are problems. Sure it relies more on social incentives more than economic incentives. That would mean less bribes and an actual threat to your reputation. As Napoleon said, the morale is to physical is 3:1. The impact is greater right? Wrong. It has a lot of problems.

I will highlight only 2 problems. You figure out the rest. Why? I'm trying to apply the 80/20 principle by showing you the two most important reasons, even if reason one is already worth 80%.

In case you are wondering why I'm doing this, I'm trying to be a minimalist. I have a site which tries to do a minimalist approach to reviewing movies.

Reason # 1: Nobody(almost) checks the MMDA website

When was the last time you checked it? See, how can you make someone feel ashamed when not a single person he knows(including himself) actually is aware of that site. The only use for this is if someone wants to ruin your reputation. This is the kind of site your scheming coworker would check to nab your promotion. This is a site that blackmailers would probably use.

The worst thing that could happen, other than people using it to damage your reputation, is for the cops to see you speeding and give you a ticket the moment they see your car. That is all(for reason # 1)

Reason # 2: People frankly do NOT care

I mean come on. This is the Philippines. When was the last time you actually condemned a man for speeding? See. You don't. You know the law usually gets broken and besides it's a minor law. Nobody died or got injured or anything. If your eyes still aren't open, then remember this. This is one of the few countries where radio DJs talk about how they were tricked by the cops to bribe MORE.  The government doesn't even approach them and say "Hey, you can't bribe a cop." I remember that "kuliglig" are banned, yet I still see a lot of them.

If this Wall of Shame thing actually succeeds, the country has either improved or MMDA finally knew how to properly leverage the internet by posting content that people actually cared about.
